Coming from Europe and taking off one’s shoulders the burden of the dull and daily grind, summer appears here like a special sunny time set aside from life. Picture yourself sipping a fruit juice on a terrace, slumping in a deck chair beside a pool, starting on an exotic ramble, or becoming a kite surf champion!! The aroma of grilling fish or simmering couscous is already tickling our nostrils….Hmm.
One thing is sure: during the summer a certain feeling of peace takes hold of you and the sun plays a definite role in this. Is the weather becoming the master of the world? Concerts, activities, drinks before dinner on a small or large scale, lengthy evenings, scorching heat, swaying all night to the tune of summer hits: summer has come. We can feel it already as the Gnaoua and World Music Festival opens with a gigantic music festival whose program will rejoice all music lovers.
Another anniversary this year as on the 6th of June 2003, the first issue of the Guido magazine was published. Ten years of discoveries, of unusual finds, of rambles in the surrounding areas. Ten years of letting the town entice us to its small secret places, to its blind alleys, to its beautiful mansions and secret yards. Ten years beside you, faithful reader, eager for learning and sharing.
This issue covers several overviews of the town, of places in the Medina that have changed very little or not at all and that we like just as much, a pictorial overview of the soul of Essaouira and its surroundings, as pictures speak more than words! We offer you as well a selection of Souri painters and artists, who are an integral part of the town and its image, of the area of El Hanchane, of Essaouira and its joutiya, the flea market situated in the industrial zone north of the town.
Years are passing by but the charm and magic of the city of all winds and its spellbinding atmosphere still overpower newcomers in spite of hotel or road constructions which have transformed the harbour village into the actual town.
The summer season being favourable for open air activities, this issue goes round the town and its surrounding area to offer you a series of sports and other pleasurable activities. Dozens of flags bearing the colours of local and international artists from the Air and Harbour project will fly in the wind and cheer up the harbour and its promenade; the exhibition will open on the 5th of July and will last until the end of August.
In short, this summer promises to be warm, friendly and full of what can make the holiday makers happy: sports, lazing around, rambles together with beautiful meetings!
Happy holidays to all and good reading!
