The theme of water is central in the Moroccan approach to sustainable development.
From Marrakech to Essaouira, throughout the Tensift Haouz Plain, groundwater is the main water resources exploited. The average level of groundwater has fallen by 20 meters in less than 30 years. Therefore, we have to dig deeper to find water of lower quality and, despite the wet winter, the reserves are far from reaching levels of the 80’s.
Agriculture and tourism are the sectors that consume the most water, but it is not enough to do nothing, but rather raise awareness of the changing situation and act. It is important to encourage water saving initiatives such as the drip irrigation on farms or wastewater retreatment plans and the establishment of recycling water to irrigate golf courses for example.
On another level, hotels and guest houses can choose to install water-saving materials to limit unnecessary flows. Individuals can also make the choice of suitable equipment and reduce their environmental impact, save costs without sacrificing comfort.
Finally, we must change our behavior to consume less and better. It is important to be aware of the pressure we exert on the resource and the means at our individual level to optimize our consumption.
Together we can preserve this wealth, because water is life.
