Guido : 29 - THE WATIER STATION - MOULAY BOUZERKTOUN

One should explore the dunes surrounding Essaouira, either on foot or on horseback: leave the town by the road to Marrakech, then, after a few kilometres, take the coastal road to Safi.
Moulay Bouzerktoun is at 25 km from Essaouira and is a village-spot for kite-surfing, windsurfing or surfing. It is a small village in the making since the urban development plan has been altered: its inhabitants can now get planning permission and more and more land is used for touristic or individual projects. The authorities launched an acceleration plan for administrative procedures so that the building work can go ahead faster.
This village offers a definite ecological interest because of its situation beside the sea and of the surrounding dunes. Long strolls can be organised nearby either in the dunes or on the beaches or more inland in a green countryside.
As of now, only a few small restaurants offer a break for drinks or for simple meals. The village marabout which was recently repainted in red and which overlooks the beach is a resting and worship place for the Brotherhood of the Regraga in April each year: an occasion of great rejoicing.
Halfway between Essaouira and Moulay Bouzerktoun, one can find the Watier station of the Forestry Commission. A big red milestone marks the entrance to the track: the post can be reached on the heights after about 3km and it is possible to talk with the staff there.
The view is phenomenal there: on a clear day, one can see Essaouira in the South and the coast of Moulay Bouzerktoun in the North. Numerous walks can be organised starting from Essaouira or going towards Moulay Bouzerktoun passing through the dunes and their particular vegetation.
